Why CAE is a Notes client feature not a Domino Designer feature
In the world of composite applications there is the role of developer and the role of application assembler.
The developer builds the component, be it a NSF component (such as a Notes view or Notes form), an Eclipse SWT component, a component built in WebSphere Portlet Factory, etc. Developers who have expertise with specific tools can build components in these heterogeneous technologies. The developer provides the business logic of the component and the interface for inter-component communication via properties and actions.
As composite applications work with reusable, loosely coupled components, the assembler uses CAE to place the components on the page(s) of the composite applicaiton and uses the wiring panel to define the action/event relationships between the components for inter-component communication. The drag-n-drop capabilities of CAE enable individuals who have appropriate business knowledge, but no development knowledge to create useful composite applications from the developer provided components.
As CAE is a Notes client install option, users who have appropriate business knowledge can be provided with this feature and can create and modify composite applications, provided the user has access to modify or create composite applications.
In many organizations, the role of the developer and the role of the application assembler may be performed by the same individual, but where there a different individuals that perform this role, organizations have more flexibility and can relieve the bottleneck that is sometimes encountered with dependencies on IT development to provide tightly coupled applications.
